The Leifur Eiríksson International Air Terminal Ltd. was established by an Act of Parliament in May 2000, and began operation on 1 October that year. The new Company was founded through the merger of two public enterprises, the Duty-Free Store at Keflavík Airport and the Leifur Eiríksson Air Terminal, the latter of which operated the real property of the Terminal. Article 7 of the above Act specifies the purpose of the Company as the operation, maintenance and development of the Leifur Eiríksson Air Terminal, including duty-free shops at Keflavík Airport and related activities.  The Icelandic Treasury is the Company’s shareholder. The Icelandic Foreign Minister manages the Treasury’s shareholding.

One of the objectives specified in the operating licence of the Leifur Eiríksson International Air Terminal Ltd., issued by the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs on 1 November 2000, is for the Terminal to provide excellent services to air passengers at all times. Also, the purpose of the licence is to assign responsibility to the company for the administration and operation of commercial trade in duty-free goods at Keflavík Airport, as well as for any other types of operation inherent in this role.

About the operation

From the beginning of 2005, Fríhöfnin ehf. (Duty Free Store Ltd.) was founded as a subsidiary of the Leifur Eiríksson Air Terminal plc (LEAT) and took over the retail business. The Duty Free Store will thus be separate, both administratively and operationally, from the running of the Terminal. The Terminal’s property management, along with support divisions, will remain under the management of LEAT. Duty Free Store Ltd. will purchase services from the LEAT support divisions, under special agreements between the companies. The LEAT property division will continue to handle all interaction with businesses operating in the Terminal. This arrangement is in accord with a resolution of the board of LEAT plc., which has been notified to competition authorities.
